About this piece:
I woke up one morning and had a strong urge to drive 8 hours by myself through the desert to Palm Springs. Before I left, I grabbed my camera. I hadn’t been since I was sixteen and I arrived in a daze to a small motel with a pool surrounded by rustling palms and Modernist architecture. Everything felt familiar yet vast and alien, like wandering around a mall after it’s closed. The sparsely populated oasis is in the middle of a valley in a huge desert where perfect lawns are being watered constantly and AC’s are blasting. Being there felt so surreal that the only way to wrap my head around the experience was through photographs.
