About this piece:
I have a vase that my Mom made in College in our dining room with dried okra in it. I’ve had the vase for as long as I can remember. I think she gave it to me when I was about seven; I’ve always been obsessed with it. I guess I didn’t realize how interesting the form was until I came across a photograph of a piece of driftwood standing upright on a table. The image was beautiful and it mimicked the shape of the vase and okra so perfectly I knew I had to paint it. The purple okra fingers are my favorite part of this image. I was trying to figure out what to do exactly with these dead fingers. I was jotting down different ideas and sketches onto purple post-its. They were stuck all over the painting and I realized the colors went perfectly together.
